Potential Health Hazards: The only potential health hazards involved with this product arise from its use.  On heating, metal and metal oxide fumes may be evolved but are unlikely to exceed the stated OESs under normal conditions.  However severe overheating could lead to the emission of fumes in harmful concentrations.

The Health and Safety Executive in their Guidance Note EH40 list the following Occupational Exposure Standards (OESs) for metals commonly used in phosphorus containing brazing alloys.

  Long-Term Short-term
(8 Hour TWA value) (10 min TWA value)

Silver 0.1mg/m3 -

Copper fume (as Copper) 0.2mg/m3 -

Tin compound in organic (as Tin) 2.0mg/m3 4.0mg/m3

Antimony (as Antimony Trioxide) 0.5mg/m3 -

Phosphorus Oxide: There are no exposure levels given for phosphorus as an oxide in the Health and Safety Executive's Guidance Note EH40.

On overheating corrosive phosphorus pentoxide fumes may be evolved which are irritating to mucous membranes, the respiratory system, eyes and skin.

Inhalation: Metal fume fever can be caused by exposure to excessive fumes of copper oxides.  Symptoms are similar to those of influenza and often appear after a latent period of up to 10 hours.  They normally disappear after 24 hours with rest.

In the event of inhalation of metal fumes the person should be removed from further exposure and into fresh air.  If symptoms persist, medical attention should be sought.

  Ingestion: Not applicable
  Eye contact: Not applicable
  Skin contact: Not applicable
First aid: None required in each case

Protective Measures: Tests to determine whether or not OESs are being exceeded can be carried out by sampling the air using lapel samplers on the operators or static samplers suitably situated.  Normal analytical techniques are used to determine the metals on the filter.  If tests show that OESs are being exceeded, local exhaust ventilation should be installed and checked for efficiency under brazing conditions to ensure that HSE regulations are being met.

Storage: No special precautions necessary, although alloys should be protected from contamination.

Reactivity: No special precautions necessary.

Spillage: Not applicable.

Fire Hazard Data: Non-flammable.  Use full protection with breathing apparatus in a fire as harmful fumes may be evolved from the molten alloy.  Use any extinguishing medium suitable for surrounding fire.
Transport & Packing: The material is not classified as a hazardous substance for transport.

Labelling of Packaging: Warning label clearly visible on all packages stating the dangers of overheating.

Disposal: Dispose of waste according to local and National regulations.  Recommended method:  as scrap for refining.
