ELKANITE 100W RECOMMENDED MACHINING CONDITIONS
When machining tungsten it has to be taken into account that tungsten is brittle at ambient temperature. Only when heated to the so-called “brittle-to-ductile transition temperature” does it become ductile. This transition temperature depends upon the purity and the previous deformation history of the metal and lies between 100 and 300 degrees C. It is therefore recommended to heat especially thick-walled workpieces to 2000C prior to machining.
DRILLING |
Cemented
carbide grade l.S.O. K01 Nose
angle 118-120 degrees. Clearance
angle at main cutting edge 12 degrees. Clearance
angle at circumference 10 degrees. Cutting
speed v = 12-18m/minute. Drilling
dry or cooling with highly chlorinated cutting oils.
(See note 1) |
TURNING |
Straight
turning tools made of cemented carbide grade l.S.O. K01. Side
rake 0-5 degrees approx. Clearance
angle 8-10 degrees. Nose
angle 90 degrees. Nose
radius 0.8-1.2mm. Feed
1 = 0.2-0.35mm. Cutting
speed v = 100-120 m/minute (See note 2) Coolant:
emulsion. It
is recommended to warm pieces of larger wall thickness and higher deformation
to 200 degrees C before or during turning |
MILLING |
Cemented
carbides grade l.S.O. K10 and K01. Side
rake 10 degrees. Clearance
angle 8 degrees. Nose
angle 90 degrees. Nose
radius 0.3mm. Feed
1 = 0.3mm. Depth
of cut a = 2 mm. Cutting
speed v = 20-30 m/minute. Milling
dry. The
milling heads should be sharpened by diamond grinding wheels with particle
size D 70. |
PLANING |
Cemented
carbide grade l.S.O. K01. Same
tool geometry as for TURNING. Cutting
speed v = 10 to 25 m/minute. Planing
dry. Tungsten
should be planed from both sides. Prior
or during planing it should be heated to 200 degrees C. |

GRINDING |
Abrasive
silicon carbide wheels, hardness H, l, J and K, particle size 60-120,
with average structure
and ceramic binder. Depth
of cut a = max. 0.02mm. Grinding
speed v = max. 1800 m/minute. Cooling
with aqueous emulsions. |

NOTE 1 |
When using highly-chlorinated lubricants such as trichloroethyleno, carbontetrachloride, etc. safety regulations must be observed. |

NOTE
2 |
When
turning Tungsten to smaller diameters than 5mm it is recommended to
reduce the cutting speed to 20-45 m/minute.
