Elkanite 100W is normally used as a tip or facing on a water cooled copper alloy backing electrode when resistance welding copper based materials. It does not alloy appreciably with nonferrous metals and is particularly used as an electrode in resistance brazing and soldering, and for some hot rivetting/electrical upsetting operations.
Elkanite 100W is extremely hard and has relatively poor ductility below 300 degs C which makes it extremely difficult to machine. It may be ground to shape, but care must be taken to avoid cracking of the material due to frictional heat and local thermal expansion.
